History of Franklin County


Preston is located in the center of Franklin County — one of Idaho’s 44 — in the the Southeast corner of the Gem State. Population of the county was 12,000 in Two state owned relic halls contain a wealth of early Idaho artifacts. the last census with 5000 in the city.

At an elevation of 4,718 feet, Preston is surrounded by fertile farm ground used to grow all types of grains and hay. Some row crops are also grown.

The county is located in the heart of the Cache Valley Dairy District.

Annual mean temperatures is 46°. Summer temperatures seldom go higher than 90° and coldest temperatures seldom go below 0°.

The county has a three-member commission form of government and the city a mayor-council.

Believing that children are the best crop produced, Greek revival architecture in the state of Idaho citizens of the area have provided good schools. There are two high schools in the county — Preston and West Side. Three elementary schools dot the area as well as a middle school in Preston.

Service clubs and lodges are in rich abundance with people actively engaged in many community events. Some of these include: The Preston Area Chamber of Commerce, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Auxiliaries, Elks, Lions, Rotary, Kiwanas, Lady Elks, Hospital Auxiliary, Volunteer Firefighters and Ambulance, Sheriff’s Search and Rescue, Worm Creek Theater Guild and The Preston Golf and Country Club.

This area is served by a weekly newspaper, “The Preston Citizen”, and a radio station, KACH AM-1340.
